I'm not exactly sure what "gift item" means — that could be just about anything at this time of year, as past holidays have taught me. But you can get 40% off one gift item, whatever that is, at Barnes & Noble now through Dec. 24.

Barnes & Noble: 30% off one item.
Last-minute shoppers, all is not lost! Barnes & Noble has a 30% off one item coupon that's good through Dec. 24. There's a bit of fine print, but it mostly applies to everything, so shop away!
And if your holiday shopping is already done, feel free to breathe a sigh of relief and use this for yourself.

Barnes & Noble: 20% off one item, 50% off cookbooks.
This isn't THAT great of a deal, but maybe I'm just posting it because I'm nostalgic for the glory days of Borders coupons. Now through Dec. 8, you can get 20% off one item at Barnes & Noble's online store using promo code T3N9N3L.
Of course, that doesn't really make up for having to pay shipping unless you hit the $25 free shipping mark, so it's probably best used on a bigger-ticket item. Sadly, the Nook e-reader is excluded from this deal, but it looks like just about everything else is fair game.
Oh, and all cookbooks are 50% off at B&N.com today, too!

Barnes & Noble: 50% off list price on kids' picture books.
Well, it's official: Barnes & Noble is ready to step up and take Borders' discarded tiara as the king of coupons! (Maybe a tiara isn't sufficiently kingly?) Last week's 50% off coupon worked flawlessly at the store for me, so this coupon for 50% off kids' picture books should be equally smooth. (The printable coupon link is in the comments section.)
There's no stated limit for the number of books you can buy, so I think everybody on my list is getting a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar for Xmas this year. Don't tell!

Barnes & Noble: 50% off list price of one book.
What's this? Is Barnes & Noble stepping into the coupon-parade shoes of the now-defunct Borders? Today they've got a fans-only promotion: click "Claim Coupon" to get your personalized coupon for 50% off the list price of one book.
Coupon expires Nov. 6, so use it fast if you're going to!

Zombie Borders: 33% off your entire purchase.
Well, how about that! Just the other day I was lamenting how the steady stream of Borders coupons always gave me things to post, and how I was going to miss them. And now we have a hauntingly similar promo code out from Zombie Borders! (The walking corpse of Borders.com is now being run by Barnes & Noble - you may have received an email this week notifying you that B&N was taking over Borders' email lists.)
Use promo code BNJ9464R to get 33% off your entire order. Good through 12/6/11 - maybe to get rid of the last bits of inventory? That's even better than the single-item discount we used to get with the coupons! I already like Zombie Borders.

B&N: Parents magazine subscription for $1.
Know anyone who's a parent, or soon to be one? Maybe they'd like a one-year subscription to Parents magazine for just $1. Get it online at Barnes and Noble using promo code K4M8W9D (otherwise, it's $4.97, which still seems like a pretty good price).
This looks to be part of their $5-off magazine sale, which has some other deals if you're a print magazine reader. Check it out!

Groupon: $10 for $20 at Barnes & Noble.
Perhaps inspired by Amazon's monster Groupon deal a couple of weeks ago, Barnes & Noble is doing the same thing today: $10 gets you $20 credit at Barnes & Noble, either in-store or online. (The deal is out of Chicago, but you can see in the fine print that it's valid anywhere.)
There's a limited number of coupons available and the deadline to buy is Feb. 7, so don't wait too long! You have until April 11 to use the full $20 and after that it goes down to the $10 purchase price, so time is of the essence with this deal.

The magazine deals just keep on coming... now we have $1 for a one-year subscription to Parents magazine, through Barnes & Noble. Use promo code K9B9J4H at checkout and marvel at the savings!

Free Barnes & Noble Cafe coffee when you show an e-book.
Barnes & Noble has been offering some fairly kooky coupons lately, and this one's no exception: get a free brewed hot or iced coffee when you show them the e-book you're reading, using the BN e-reader app, on your smart gadget device. So first you have to download the (free) BN e-reader app, then you have to download some free public-domain book to it, and then you take that to the unimpressed barista who has never heard of this promotion.
It sounds rather complicated to me, but then, I don't know how badly you want a free coffee.

Barnes & Noble BOGO lattes (members only).
Barnes & Noble has been putting a lot of coupons out lately, but all the good ones seem to be for its paying members, to which I say FEH. Still, if you're a B&N member, you may enjoy this coupon for BOGO lattes at their cafe.
The coupon is good through July 25, so you have a while to use it, although by next month an iced latte will probably sound more appealing.

Free muffin w/any B&N Cafe purchase + coupons.
Ehhh, these coupons aren't the most amazing, but I want to be supportive of Barnes & Noble's efforts to join the bookstore coupon trend, so I'm going to post them anyway. This big old page of coupons includes a free muffin with any B&N Cafe purchase (remember, they're not real Starbucks stores, so your gift cards don't work there), plus some discounts on specific book titles and series.
There's also a link you can click for coupon codes for the online version, but I'd like to see how they plan to mail you a free muffin. If it was Amazon, I would believe they could do it, but B&N is no Amazon.

BOGO Frappucinos at Barnes & Noble Cafes.
Raise your hand if this has ever happened to you: you're in Barnes & Noble, you see their little in-store cafe full of baristas in green aprons serving Starbucks coffee, and you think, A-ha! I have a Starbucks gift card! You order your triple-shot venti Frappucino with extra sprinkles, and when it's time to pay, smugly whip out your gift card... only to be told that, despite appearances, it's not a REAL Starbucks and therefore your money is no good. Arrghh! There is no $4.59 as painful as the $4.59 you're forking over on something you thought was free.
Well, rest easy: Barnes & Noble has a slew of coupons this week, including one for its Starbucks-lookalike non-Starbucks cafe: buy one Frappucino, get one free! There are also some discounts for specific bestsellers, discounts off the "Glee" music collections, and some teen vampire book discounts too, so check it out while you're sipping on that second icy beverage.

Barnes & Noble: Buy a $100 gift card, get a $10 gift card free.
Barnes & Noble is jumping on the bonus-gift-card bandwagon with their own offer: spend $100 in gift cards, get a $10 bonus gift card free. The best part is, the bonus gift card is emailed to you on Dec. 26, so there's no question of having to give it to someone else - you'll just have to use it on yourself. Coincidentally, that will be right when the post-holiday sales fire up, too. Discounted calendars and next year's Xmas cards, anyone?

Barnes & Noble: Free hot chocolate and cookie Oct. 24.
Well, this is an interesting development... is Barnes & Noble trying to steal away my loyalty by picking up Borders' free-drink-coupon slack? B&N has this printable coupon for a small hot chocolate and a cookie, good October 24 only (this Sat.). It doesn't look like you have to be a member of their rewards program or anything, you just have to show up with your coupon and a sweet tooth. Nice!
Now to print out 20 copies and plan a route to all the B&Ns in the area...

Lots of magazines, $5 off at Barnesandnoble.com.
$5 off a ton of magazine titles at Barnes & Noble's online store, which brings many of them well under $10. Some of them are around $5 for a one-year subscription! That's basically the price of a single issue. Of course, logic like this is why I'm pushing 20 magazine subscriptions now, but I'll never lack for airplane reading, now will I?

Barnes & Noble: 20% off Moleskine journals.
So this one, as opposed to a Borders coupon, actually is kind of a rarity. Moleskine journals really don't go on sale, well, ever - but they're 20% off now at Barnes & Noble online, for a limited time. If you have a B&N membership, you get an additional discount off of that sale price, too.
Of course, if you wait for a Borders coupon for 25%, 30%, or 40% off any item, you can score an even better deal on Moleskines there - but B&N does seem to have a larger inventory, so if you want a limited-edition design or a special color, this might be the time to strike.
