Seattle: Library Book Sale this weekend!

Yep, it's back - the biggest book sale of the year, put on by the Friends of the Library. For the last time, it will be at the giant hangar at Magnusson Park (which will be closed down for public events this year), so this is your final chance to see a warehouse full of huge tables stacked with boxes and boxes of books at bargain prices.

If you've never been, this is a savings extravaganza. They have new hardcover and paperback books in many genres, plus rare and collectible items, as well as DVD and VHS, CDs, children's books, and even gift items like stationery, art prints, and holiday decor.

Sunday is the day for the biggest savings, when everything is half-off, but you'll get the best selection early on (Friday or Saturday). Not a decision to be taken lightly!

Reminder: Seattle Library Book Sale tomorrow, Nov. 20.

It's book sale time! The Friends of the Seattle Library are having a holiday book sale on Sat., November 20, at Warren G. Magnuson Park, Building 30 Workshop, 7400 Sand Point Way NE.

This isn't the ginormous twice-annual one, but there's still more than 10,000 items, including holiday books, CDs, gift books, a general selection of fiction and non-fiction books, as well as a large selection of quality children's books — most for $1.

The Friends holiday sale is open to the public; you do not need to be a member to attend. Proceeds benefit the Seattle Public Library.

Information: Seattle libraries will be closed 8/30 through 9/6.

If you're a Seattle library patron, you probably know this already, but just as a reminder, libraries will be closed from Aug. 30 to Sep. 6. On the bright side, due dates will be suspended and no late fees will accrue during that time, and their online database will still be working; on the downside, book drops won't be open, patrons won't be able to reserve a computer in a branch, the Quick Information telephone service will be down, and you can't send texts or e-mails to librarians or chat with them online. Oh, and no free wifi.

However, the electronic/digital collection of e-books, music, and movies WILL be available, so if you haven't ever tried that, this might be a good week to give it a whirl.

This furlough will save $650,000, part of $3 million in cuts the library system was required to make in 2010, and more unpleasantness may be coming, like higher late fines. If you feel strongly about this, consider attending the public hearing on the idea at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Central Library.

Seattle: Free SAM admission 2/28 with library card.

Hey Seattle, want to check out the SAM for free? On February 28, anyone with a Seattle Public Library card can get a free admission to the museum just by showing their card. Library card holders will also receive 25 percent off the purchase of a book at SAM SHOP and 10 percent off either Sunday Brunch or Sunday Urban Supper at TASTE Restaurant.

I know this is like a month early, but don't worry, I'll remind you closer to the actual date. There's no excuse for not getting your free dose of culture! And the Calder exhibit is pretty cool, if you haven't seen it already.
